Role
Automotive Assistants are responsible for the safe unloading, loading, and placement of vehicles in a safe and timely manner that responds to the customers’ needs.
Critical Performance Areas
- Performing yard checks and inventory updates
- Operating, loading and unloading ramps
- Opening and closing railway car doors
- Removing and installing vehicle blocks
- Installation and removal of bridge plates between railway cars. Bridge plates are the link or connection between the railway car junctions used to bridge the gap
Working Conditions
- Working shifts, weekends, and holidays
- Working on call
- Frequent lifting weights up to 50 pounds
- Able to work outdoors in extreme weather conditions
- Physical work, being able to walk long distances, climb railcar ladders and crouch inside railcars
Employment Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalence
- Valid class 5 driver license and ability to drive a manual transmission
- Minimum two years’ driving experience
- Clean driving record with no infractions in the last five years; driving record must be provided
- Good teamwork and communication skills
- Good hand‑eye coordination
- Technology and computer skills applicable to the job
- Ability to correctly analyze a situation and respond appropriately
Training
Automotive Assistants receive a 2‑day classroom training with a health & safety team member covering CN’s rules, policies, procedures, and safety measures at the Automotive Facility. This is followed by a 2‑week on‑the‑job practical training, after which new hires are mentored and coached during a 3‑month probation period.
Salary
Hourly rate.
