Role

Automotive Assistants are responsible for the safe unloading, loading, and placement of vehicles in a safe and timely manner that responds to the customers’ needs.

Critical Performance Areas

  • Performing yard checks and inventory updates
  • Operating, loading and unloading ramps
  • Opening and closing railway car doors
  • Removing and installing vehicle blocks
  • Installation and removal of bridge plates between railway cars. Bridge plates are the link or connection between the railway car junctions used to bridge the gap

Working Conditions

  • Working shifts, weekends, and holidays
  • Working on call
  • Frequent lifting weights up to 50 pounds
  • Able to work outdoors in extreme weather conditions
  • Physical work, being able to walk long distances, climb railcar ladders and crouch inside railcars

Employment Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalence
  • Valid class 5 driver license and ability to drive a manual transmission
  • Minimum two years’ driving experience
  • Clean driving record with no infractions in the last five years; driving record must be provided
  • Good teamwork and communication skills
  • Good hand‑eye coordination
  • Technology and computer skills applicable to the job
  • Ability to correctly analyze a situation and respond appropriately

Training

Automotive Assistants receive a 2‑day classroom training with a health & safety team member covering CN’s rules, policies, procedures, and safety measures at the Automotive Facility. This is followed by a 2‑week on‑the‑job practical training, after which new hires are mentored and coached during a 3‑month probation period.

Salary

Hourly rate.
