Job Description

Title: Bus Driver

Job Status: FLSA Overtime Eligible

Reports To: Coordinator of Transportation

Department: Business Operations – Transportation

Position Summary

To provide safe and efficient transportation so that students may enjoy the fullest possible advantage from the district’s curriculum and extra‑curricular program.

Job Qualifications

  • A high school diploma or equivalent training and experience.
  • At least 21 years of age with a minimum of two years of driving experience.
  • Meets all the physical, mental and moral requirements established by federal rule, state laws and Chapter 3301‑83 of Ohio Administrative Code.
  • Being physically qualified (Rule 3301‑83‑07 of Ohio Administrative Code).
  • Ohio School Bus Driver’s license, Class B‑SP endorsement on a Commercial Driver’s License.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to interact in a professional manner.
  • Appropriately dressed, neat and clean appearance.
  • Physical capability of appropriately lifting and managing preschool and students with special needs when necessary.
  • All drivers once employed are subject to the Federal Commercial Driver License Drug and Alcohol laws, including random, reasonable‑suspicion and post‑accident testing.
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board of Education may find appropriate and acceptable.

Essential Duties

  • Observing all mandatory safety regulations for school buses.
  • Maintaining discipline and order with students while on the bus and at bus stops.
  • Using the department discipline ladder to report discipline issues to the proper authority.
  • Reporting undisciplined students to the proper authority.
  • Keeping the assigned bus clean and fueled.
  • Striving to maintain the assigned schedule.
  • Performing complete daily pre‑ and post‑trip inspections of assigned vehicle(s) including completion of appropriate documentation.
  • Transporting students while driving in a safe manner at all times.
  • Notifying the Coordinator of Transportation in case of mechanical failure, tardiness, or absenteeism by the designated time.
  • Discharging students only at authorized stops.
  • Exercising responsible leadership when on out‑of‑district school trips.
  • Transporting only authorized students, coaches, teachers and chaperones.
  • Reporting all accidents as soon as practical and completing required reports.
  • Ensuring that regulations for student bus responsibilities are followed.
  • Developing and maintaining accurate LEFT/RIGHT and/or route sheets that are clear for sub use.
  • Conducting appropriate school bus evacuation and safety training.
  • Attending all mandatory departmental in‑service meetings.
  • Complying with all Federal, state and local laws and regulations for the storage, use and disposal of trash, rubbish, waste and hazardous material [OSHA].
  • Complying with all Federal, state and local laws and regulations for the maintenance, repair and operation of equipment and machines [OSHA].
  • Establishing and maintaining cooperative professional relationships.
  • Exhibiting professional behavior, emotional stability and sound judgement.
  • Maintaining confidentiality and respect for confidential information at all times.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Superintendent or his/her designee.

Terms of Employment

Substitute status through training process.

Salary

$21.23/hr
