Job Summary
We are seeking an experienced and driven Network Expansion & Last-Mile Operations Manager to lead the growth of our delivery network across South Africa. This role will be responsible for expanding operations in key metropolitan areas and secondary towns, building strong local partnerships, and ensuring efficient and reliable last-mile delivery performance.
Key Responsibilities
1. Network Expansion Strategy
- Design and execute a territory-based expansion plan covering major metros such as Gauteng, Cape Town, and Durban, as well as secondary towns.
- Identify high-demand and underserved areas to prioritize network rollout and expansion.
2. Partner Sourcing & Onboarding
- Identify, evaluate, and onboard local delivery partners, including independent riders, small courier companies, spaza shops (as pickup/drop-off points), and micro-fulfillment centers.
- Conduct due diligence on partner capabilities, compliance requirements (e.g., SAPS, PSIRA if applicable), and operational readiness.
3. Operational Setup & Training
- Train partners on standard operating procedures (SOPs), including parcel handling, returns management, cash-on-delivery (COD) processes, and safety protocols.
- Implement real-time tracking and reporting systems (e.g., WhatsApp, SMS, or app-based tools) to ensure operational visibility.
4. Performance Management
- Establish and monitor key performance indicators (KPIs), including delivery success rate, on-time performance, cost per parcel, and customer satisfaction.
- Identify performance gaps and implement corrective action plans to improve efficiency and service quality.
Qualifications
Experience
- Minimum of 3+ years of experience in last-mile logistics, express courier services, or e-commerce fulfillment within South Africa.
- Proven track record of independently expanding delivery networks into new townships, suburbs, or rural areas.
Local Market Knowledge
- Strong understanding of South Africa’s township delivery models and security considerations.
- Existing relationships with local courier associations, rider groups, or pickup/drop-off networks are highly advantageous.
Skills & Competencies
- Strong negotiation, partner management, and contract management skills.
- Ability to train and manage external partners effectively.
- Data-driven mindset with proficiency in spreadsheets and performance tracking tools.
- Strong problem-solving and operational execution capabilities.
