Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM) is inviting applications for the Permanent Relief Deckhand Eligibility List Position with the Ferry Division of Halifax Transit.

The Relief Deckhand is administratively responsible to the Supervisors, Ferry Operations. While working on a vessel, the Relief Deckhand is functionally responsible to the Vessel’s Captain.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
:
The Relief Deckhand shall:

Conduct duties and responsibilities in accordance with the Ferry Operations Manual and the published ferry schedule

Maintain upper deck cleanliness, shovel snow from ferry upper decks and spread urea as required to maintain safe conditions for passengers and crew

Assist Ferry Crew members as directed by the Captain

Operate ferry ramps to facilitate the safe embarkation and disembarkation of passengers

Perform duties in accordance with the Muster List for each ferry

Perform duties in accordance with the Ferry Security Plan for each ferry

Reports any irregularities to the Captain and the Supervisors, Ferry Operations

When assigned Deck Force, assist with planned and corrective maintenance activities at the Woodside maintenance facility; in particular:
Paint ferry vessel interior and exterior surfaces and Conduct minor repairs

Other duties as assigned by the Supervisors, Ferry Operations

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience:

Ability to communicate in English (oral and written)

Technical / Job Specific Knowledge and Abilities:

Required Certificates Recognized by Transport Canada:

Proficiency in Survival Craft Other Than Fast Rescue Craft

Six-month sea service would be considered an asset
