Job Summary

This series exists to provide and preserve a safe and efficient transportation system for the traveling public as well as being courteous, considerate and prompt in dealing with and serving the public. Positions will be assigned based on experience and qualifications listed below.

Job Duties

Highway Operations Worker
:
Entry-level position. Responsibilities include operation of motorized vehicles and equipment, pavement care and preservation, landscape care and preservation, roadside shoulder restoration and repairs, signing and striping, delivery of equipment and materials, environmental compliance, and vehicle and equipment care.

Highway Operations Tech 1:
Apprentice classification. Subjects trained in more advanced duties similar to those listed for the worker, plus additional responsibilities.

Highway Operations Tech 2:
Intermediate-level position. Responsible for performing a broad scope of intermediate highway operational duties and/or lead responsibilities, as well as scheduling, assigning, overseeing, inspecting, training, and guiding staff.

Highway Operations Tech 3:
Full trajectory classification. Responsible for high-level highway operation duties and supervisory responsibilities, and oversight duties as described for Tech 2.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs)

Highway Operations Worker: Preferred candidate has six months of roadway/highway job-related experience including operation of motorized vehicles and equipment, signing/striping, pavement care and preservation, and related tasks.

Highway Operations Tech 1: Requires one year of job-related experience as above.

Highway Operations Tech 2: Requires two years of job-related experience as above.

Highway Operations Tech 3: Requires three years of job-related experience as above.

Selective Preference

Six months experience in related fields for Highway Operations Worker.

Pre-Employment Requirements

Highway Operations Worker:
Must obtain Arizona CDL Class “A” permit within 90 days from hire and Arizona Class “A” CDL within 6 months of hire.

Highway Operations Tech 1-3:
Must possess an Arizona Class “A” CDL with manual or automatic transmission and a (N) tanker endorsement prior to the start date. Additional endorsements may be required.

  • Registration with the FMCSA Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse is required for all CDL holders. Candidates must register and authorize ADOT to conduct limited queries on their CDL.
  • Position responds to emergency call outs 24/7 and must be able to reach the maintenance yard within 30 minutes.
  • Work may involve extremes of cold and heat, extensive travel, rugged terrain, and high‑speed traffic conditions.
  • Position requires lifting/carrying or pushing/pulling 50 lbs.
  • May require licensing through the State Board of Pesticide Control to dispense herbicides/pesticides.

All newly hired State employees must successfully complete the Electronic Employment Eligibility Verification Program (E‑Verify).
