Position: Highway Maintenance Worker I – Small Equipment Operator (61032347)

Under direct supervision, assists in the performance of a wide variety of maintenance activities in the construction, repair, and preservation of roads and bridges on the state highway system. May operate standard motorized equipment used in the construction and maintenance of highways of the movement of materials and supplies used to perform these maintenance activities on a District Full-Depth Patching Specialty Crew.

Operates a 5‑yard standard dump truck and flatbed truck for hauling materials such as asphalt, limestone, dirt, soil, cement, pipe, construction materials, and debris. Operates small equipment such as brush chipper, pneumatic (≤ 4 tons), broom sweepers, trailer‑mounted pipe washers, snowplow attachment, and sand spreader or brine sprayer applicator for removal of snow and ice from highways and bridges.

Responsibilities

  • Perform manual labor tasks such as full‑depth base repairs, clearing of rights‑of‑way, patching potholes, cleaning drainage ditches, repairing shoulders, paving driveways, and bridge repairs.
  • Flag traffic during road repairs to control flow of traffic to protect workers, the public, and equipment.
  • Remove litter, debris, and dead animals from roadway and rights‑of‑way.
  • Assist in the operation of medium series equipment such as aggregate spreaders, larger rollers, tandem‑axle dump trucks, trailer‑mounted injection patcher, and water trucks.
  • Conduct and document pre‑trip equipment/vehicle inspections in accordance with the Department’s current rules, policies and procedures for fleet safety.
  • Operate and maintain electric/gas powered tools in various phases of roadway maintenance.
  • Assist in emergency or inclement weather operations and support on‑call personnel; may include extended hours or shift operations.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

There are no minimum training or experience requirements for this classification.

Necessary special requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required. Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.

Physical Demands

The physical demands for the essential functions of this position involve bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, grasping and physically manipulating objects of varying size, shape, weight, and material. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. This position requires walking for extended periods, treading rough and uneven terrain, and working in close proximity to motoring traffic and natural environmental hazards.

May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental‑related emergencies. Frequently exposed to outside environment in all weather conditions, noise, and oil or grease on a daily basis.
