Responsibilities

  • Operate heavy duty equipment (backhoes, low‑boy truck tractors, excavators) in the construction, repair, and cleaning of bridges on the state highway system.
  • Perform skilled manual labor for bridge construction and maintenance, including grading, setting forms, pouring and finishing concrete, and repairing and cleaning drainage structures.
  • Train and supervise unskilled labor while operating light to heavy duty tools such as circular saws, drills, band saws, chainsaws, grinders, jack hammers, and torches in a safe and productive manner.
  • Assist with daily vehicle checklists and equipment inspections, ensuring all forms are completed accurately and timely.
  • Inspect and operate motorized vehicles and equipment, reporting required repairs to the supervisor.
  • Coordinate placement of traffic control devices to establish a maintenance work zone in accordance with the SCDOT Work Zone Traffic Control Manual and Field Guide.
  • Operate various equipment including concrete mixers, dump trucks, forklifts, snow plows, spreaders, sweepers, tracts with broom, and rollers.
  • Assist in emergency and inclement weather operations and be available for extended working hours or 12‑hour shifts as needed.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • One year of related work experience or an approved equivalent.
  • A valid motor vehicle operator’s license.
  • Requirement to obtain a Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement.

Physical Requirements

The essential functions of this position require bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, grasping, and physically manipulating objects of varying size, shape, weight, and material. Able to lift up to 50 lbs. This position requires extended periods of walking on rough and uneven terrain and working in close proximity to motor traffic and natural environmental hazards. Work may be required outside of normal hours, especially during inclement weather or departmental emergencies.
