The Aeronautical Databases Analyst is responsible for the governance, production, validation, commissioning and operational integrity of all Flight Management System (FMS) and Terrain Awareness and Warning System (TAWS) databases across the Air Canada, Air Canada Rouge and Air Canada Jetz fleets. Acting as a technical authority within Aeronautical Services, the incumbent ensures the integrity, regulatory compliance and operational readiness of navigation data that support regular and irregular operations.
They lead the identification, analysis and resolution of navigation data issues that directly affect flight safety, operational continuity and aircraft capabilities. This role requires specialized technical expertise in navigation database management, aeronautical data quality assurance, validation of operational procedures and cross-functional operational integration. Decisions and recommendations made in this role directly impact flight safety, aircraft deployment capability, operational continuity, regulatory compliance and fleet operational readiness.
Responsibilities
- Navigation data governance and AIRAC data management
- Manage end-to-end production, validation and commissioning cycles of FMS and TAWS databases in accordance with AIRAC schedules and aeronautical information release control
- Validate, verify and authorize the release of navigation databases for all fleet types and avionics platforms
- Ensure data integrity, traceability and compliance with regulatory requirements and original equipment manufacturers’ standards
- Manage configuration control across multiple vendor platforms (Jeppesen, Honeywell, Collins, Acron)
- Prepare navigation data for all regular and ad hoc operations, including charters
- Align governance processes with applicable aeronautical data quality standards, including DO-200A and DO-201A
- Serve as the operational technical authority for navigation database integrity and related operational risk management activities
- Monitor and analyze aeronautical data changes, navigation data alerts, permanent NOTAMs, airspace changes, environmental changes and updates to operational procedures
- Issue company NOTAMs and crew alerts as required to mitigate operational risks
- Lead resolution of anomalies related to the FMS, TAWS and ground-space flight plan links that affect regulation and flight safety
- Perform magnetic variation compliance analyses according to the AIRAC cycle for Boeing fleets by comparing Boeing Inertial Reference System (IRS) MAGVAR tables to coded values in FMS navigation databases, and report discrepancies affecting operations
- Produce runway exposure assessments for validation during the AIRAC cycle to support TAWS governance processes and Airbus ROPS
- Support airport authorization processes, including feasibility assessment and implementation
- Validate, compare and process RNAV, RNP AR, GLS and other advanced instrument flight procedures
- Code and maintain Air Canada-specific procedures in accordance with ARINC 424
- Ensure compliance with ICAO PANS-OPS, Transport Canada and OEM criteria
- Manage internal procedure libraries and coding standards for all fleet types
- Provide technical expertise to Standards of Flight, Chief Pilots, Flight Dispatch, Flight Operations Engineering and Performance Engineering
- Lead engagement with FMS and TAWS data vendors and ensure technical issue resolution
- Manage vendor performance, service quality and escalation related to multi-vendor issues
- Maintain production systems, tools and equipment required for database compilation cycles
- Provide technical authority and support to key operational stakeholders, including Line Operations, Chief Pilots, Flight Dispatch, Standards of Flight, Training – Flight Operations, Network Operations Control, Performance Engineering, Maintenance and Engineering
- Support implementation of new operational capabilities, avionics upgrades, link authorizations and aircraft entry-into-service activities
- Participate in operational readiness activities to support new airport introductions, airspace modernization initiatives and advanced navigation capabilities
- Align navigation data with the Electronic Flight Bag (EFB), flight planning and performance systems
- Represent Air Canada in industry forums, working groups and engagements with OEMs
- Liaise with other airlines regarding best practices, emerging risks and database issues
Qualifications
- College or university diploma in aviation, engineering or a related technical field
- At least three years’ experience in Flight Operations, Flight Dispatch, Aeronautical Services or Technical Services in a Part 705 Canadian Aviation Regulations (CARs) environment
