Dispatcher
A dispatcher at Porter Airlines is responsible for safe and efficient operational control over flights in collaboration with the pilot‑in‑command. The role includes pre‑departure planning, flight watch, authorizing aircraft release, and ensuring compliance with regulatory and company requirements.
Responsibilities
- Exercise safe and efficient operational control over Porter Airlines flights in conjunction with the pilot‑in‑command.
- Plan and monitor pre‑departure operations and flight watch within a prescribed geographic area or assigned flights.
- Authorize the release of an aircraft to operate in accordance with the flight plan.
- Analyze operational conditions and identify opportunities that may benefit or restrict operational capabilities (weather, ATC restrictions, aircraft performance).
- Perform flight watch and determine when changes to the Operational Flight Plan (OFP) are required.
- Formulate and implement revised OFPs and communicate changes to the pilot‑in‑command.
- Provide thorough and professional flight crew briefings covering all significant information that may impact the operation of the flight.
- Obtain up‑to‑date flight progress information (flight watch) and ensure the flight tracking system is current and accurate.
- Communicate OFP requirements and changes to ATC.
- Initiate emergency response procedures when required.
- Resolve conflicts with Maintenance Operations Control and the pilot‑in‑command regarding any dispatch deviations that may limit operational capabilities.
- Actively participate in Porter’s Safety Management System (SMS) and report hazards and incidents encountered in daily operations.
- Conduct on‑the‑job training for new flight dispatchers under the direction of the Chief Dispatcher.
Qualifications
- Minimum of 2 years’ experience in an airline operations centre.
- Radiotelephone Operator’s Restricted Certificate.
- Successful completion of Transport Canada FDMET and FDOPS exams within the last 2 years.
- At least 21 years of age per CARs Standard )(r).
- Working knowledge of CARs 705 or previous Type A (or equivalent) flight dispatch experience.
- Aviation college or university degree is an asset.
The role is based in Toronto, Ontario, and is part of Porter Airlines’ flight operations.
