A Summer Intern in the Transportation Department at BNSFRailway provides students with a hands‑on immersion into the operational core of rail transportation, covering areas like logistics, scheduling, and safety management. Throughout the internship, participants will gain practical experience and deepen their understanding of BNSF’s dedication to efficient and sustainable transportation services. By working closely with experienced professionals on real‑world projects, interns will enhance their skills and knowledge, setting a solid foundation for a potential career in the transportation industry.
Successful Interns may be hired as full‑time Management Trainees upon graduation.
Employment Type
This is a full‑time (40hrs/wk) position in a 24×7 operations environment, subject to on‑call, overtime, nights, alternating shifts, weekends, and holidays.
Travel and Relocation
Travel and Relocation is required for the summer, must be flexible with their location, as they could be moved depending on business needs. Must have reliable transportation to and from work.
Training
Training will start with a two‑day orientation in Fort Worth, Texas, offering a company overview and networking with leaders, followed by support on ongoing projects and practical field training at an assigned location.

- Spend the summer on an assigned Division determined before your start date and learn about the working logistics of a fast‑paced railroad through a challenging program.
- Learn to manage railroad terminal operations, work on specific logistics projects, and assist supervisors in managing train crews.
- Interact with other Operating departments, including Mechanical and Engineering and learn more about the field operations supervisory position.
- Possess leadership, teamwork, clear communication, adaptability, and resilience to overcome obstacles and meet deadlines in a dynamic work environment.
- Daily work is conducted in a mixed indoor office and outdoor safety‑sensitive environment, where working conditions can include diverse and extreme weather conditions (hot, cold, rain, snow, and sleet), walking and performing work on uneven surfaces, and working around loud noises, fumes, and heavy/moving machinery. Personal protective equipment, a hard hat, safety glasses, and gloves are required and provided by BNSF.

Basic Qualifications
- Legally authorized to work in the United States and will be at least eighteen (18) years old upon hire.
- Does not require BNSF’s assistance, now or in the future, (whether monetary, through sponsorship, or otherwise) to obtain, maintain, or extend employment authorization (including H‑1B, STEM OPT/CPT, or TN nonimmigrant status).
