Job Overview
The Intelligent Transportation System Analyst is responsible for developing, updating, and monitoring traffic signal timing plans. The role includes disseminating travel information to the public using Dynamic Message Signs (DMS) and other communication channels, managing traffic signals during planned and unplanned events, and coordinating citywide traffic management from the Traffic Management Center.
Responsibilities
- Actively manage traffic signals using the city’s ITS system for daily traffic and events such as sports, entertainment, and construction.
- Refine and monitor traffic signal timing plans based on real‑time traffic monitoring, assist emergency services, and coordinate with city departments and agencies.
- Deploy and program traffic signal timing plans and dynamic message signs for city sports facility events.
- Develop, monitor, and update traffic signal timing plans and implement citywide coordination plans using the centralized controller system.
- Evaluate traffic problems using live video to maximize the capacity of the ITS system.
- Utilize dynamic message signs and other media to communicate traffic conditions to the traveling public.
- Serve as liaison in transportation‑related committees.
- Prepare analytical studies and make verbal and written recommendations to the ITS Superintendent.
- Assist with engineering specification design and implementation of ITS technologies.
- Process Automated Traffic Signal Performance Measures (ATSPM) data and optimize traffic signal operations.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Electronics, Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
- Two (2) years of relevant experience in traffic signal systems, Intelligent Transportation Systems, telecommunications, system programming, or traffic signal timing.
- Knowledge of traffic signal operation, traffic flow, telecommunications, fiber optics, CCTV, and ITS literature.
- Familiarity with the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
- Ability to plan, organize, and carry out repairs; analyze findings; prepare and present recommendations; communicate effectively in writing and orally; establish working relationships; exercise initiative; provide quality customer service; interpret regulations and policies; conduct field observations and installations; be a public expert on ITS topics.
- Willingness to work extended hours on evenings, weekends, and holidays for events.
- Must pass drug and alcohol testing and comply with the city’s substance-abuse policy.
Special Requirements
Valid Arizona driver’s license; must pass drug and alcohol testing; willing to work extended hours on evenings, weekends, and holidays for events.
Salary
Grade 409, annual salary range $73,056 – $109,584.
